Women out to buy green bangles
They believe wearing green glass bangles during Uttrayan is auspicious

Females in Vadodara have suddenly gone on an overdrive, purchasing green glass bangles. And they are doing this to ensure the well being of their loved ones. When asked about the cause behind the sudden spree, a newlywed girl, Kinjal Parekh, said, "My friend suggested to me to wear green bangles for the well-being of my husband. But it has to be gifted by a close relative or a friend." According to those on the overdrive, it is preferable that mothers or sisters-in-law gift it. They told DNA that if a woman wanted to ensure the well being of her father-in-law, she should gift green glass bangles to her mother-in-law.Anu Patel said, "I got a message from my sister, who stays in Navsari, to wear yellow bangles for the well-being of my husband. She has sent me a set of yellow bangles, which I will have to wear till Uttarayan." She said that after the festival got over, she would have to take them off and submerge them in a river.When contacted, Mohmadbhai Bangadi Wala, a bangle dealer, said, "Generally, red bangles are regarded auspicious for married women but this time, the demand for green bangles has increased" There is a hike in the rates of green bangles. A dealer said, "We have placed two orders in just 10 days." The order normally is for 400 dozen bangles per week. Green bangles which cost around Rs12 per dozen is now available for Rs25 per dozen.Another woman, Sweta Patel, said, "I have a son, so my mother instructed me to collect seven rupees from females having only one son and purchase green bangles."Reacting to the trend, renowned Pandit of Vadodara Harshad Bapa said, "This is a wrong belief which has been intentionally spread. There are no references of this kind of belief in Hindu mythology, nor does colour science talk about it." He added, "The festival of Uttarayan is known as Makar Sankranti and donations on this day are regarded very auspicious. This time, the sun will enter the makar rashi in the after hours of January14th. So, the festival is to be celebrated on the January 15."
