Duplicate thread a killjoy for some
Fake materials are available in name of branded threads and customers are taken for a ride
Maulik Buch. Vadodara
The vibrant Uttarayan is around the corner and the festive mood is fast catching on. As if to prepare for a celestial war of sorts, the warriors are busy sharpening their weapon and brushing up their skills. This is a scene common across the state. There, however, is a dampener for the otherwise upbeat kite flyers. Duplicate materials have flooded the market in the name of branded threads. Sources say certain brands have a monopoly over manufacturing of the kite-flying thread. The thread is usually made up of cotton coats, and the kite flyers insist on eight to 12 coats. Taking advantage of the popularity of these brands, some traders appear to have formed a cartel and started selling low-quality thread in the name of popular brands. These threads are actually made for tailoring purpose. They are very cheap as the coats are less and thin in nature. A dealer at Vadodara said, "The threads are basically identified by hologram of the company. This time, however, the cartel engaged in selling duplicate thread has even managed to create holograms similar to that of the branded companies. The traders print stickers of known brands with identical holograms and just stick it to bundles." Another dealer, Iliyazbhai Chhatrivala, said, "The duplicate threads are sold in huge quantity."On identification of the original threads, he said this time the branded companies had embossed a hologram on the plastic boom on which the thread is wrapped. "Generally, the thread sold is measured in meter unit, but in practice it is sold in gram units. The weight of 5,000 meter is about 500 gm. The customers should insist on weight measurement to get the original branded thread," he said.
