Site infamous for accidents
Canal has been a witness to several other accidents
Maulik Buch. Bodeli
Wednesday's accident in which a bus plunged into the Narmada canal at Bodeli killing 41 children and three others is not the first mishap at the canal in Bodeli. In fact, accidents and suicides are so frequent here that the canal has acquired the reputation of being a 'tragedy point'. Local residents are now demanding a permanent check-post at the canal for rescue operations during emergencies. This is the first time, however, that an accident of this nature and of such magnitude has taken place at the canal near Bodeli. Alimuddin Lohar, owner of a fabricated-shed unit nearby, said, "The canal has become a suicide point. Many suicides have taken place here, the most recent being the case of the couple who committed suicide about a year back." Ramesh Baria, a local resident, said, "Just the day before, a person had fallen into the canal. Luckily, he was saved by the local fishermen." The canal is also favoured by anti-social elements looking for a quiet place to consume alcohol. As the flow of water in the canal is very fast here, only expert divers from nearby villages were able to dive beneath the water surface for rescue and recovery operations.
