Protests, slogans greet Parmar
Kin of Godhra massacre accused stage demonstration
Maulik Buch. Godhra
The kin of the Godhra massacre accused staged a demonstration at the Circuit House when the Special Investigation Team (SIT) members arrived here on Friday afternoon. They were demanding to debar investigation officer Noel Parmar from the newly-formed SIT. Parmar had earlier probed the Godhra train incident as an investigation officer. He was in the inquiry committee formed under IG Rakesh Asthana. Later, SIT was appointed by the Supreme Court to reinvestigate the Godhra carnage and the post-Godhra riots. When the SIT headed by RK Raghvan visited Godhra today, the kin of the Godhra massacre accused shouted slogans and demonstrated with banners and handouts. The demonstrators were led by Saeed Husen Umarji, son of Maulana Husen Umarji, one of the accused. Talking to DNA, Saeed said, "Parmar was earlier an investigating officer and a member of the investigating team formed soon after the incident. Designating the same person in the newly-formed SIT will not ensure a fair probe. We have sent a copy of the memorandum expressing our opposition to the NHRC chairman and registrar of the Supreme Court." Some of the agitators said Parmar had not carried out a fair investigation earlier into the offence but had falsely created the "terrorist" theory to implicate innocent Muslims. They voiced their intention to meet the SIT members but the police resisted their move.
