Maut ka Saudagar remark works in BJPs favour
Barring Vadodara (city), the BJP fails to get clear majority in any of the districts of the region
Maulik Buch. Vadodara
The 'Maut ka Saudagar' remark made by Sonia Gandhi during campaigning helped the BJP avoid a humiliating defeat in central Gujarat. In the last Assembly elections, the BJP had got 30 out of 33 seats, but this time it lost 14 seats to the Congress. Barring Vadodara (city), the BJP has not been able to get clear majority in any of the districts from central Gujarat. The undercurrent of central Gujarat was a serious matter of concern for the BJP this time. Luckily, the 'Maut ka Saudagar' comment did not go well with the voters and Modi's ability to convert adverse comments against him in his favour helped the party in duress. However, it couldn't get majority for the BJP in the region. As a result, the Congress could still perform well by winning 14 seats compared to just three in the past elections. The BJP suffered a major loss at Dahod district this time. Compared to the last elections, the BJP could hold only one seat of Randhikpur, while the Congress won Dahod, Limdi, Limkheda and Zalod seats this time. On the other hand, NCP was successful in winning Baria seat because of the strong candidate Tushar Singh who had joined the party recently. The scenario at Panchmahal, the epicenter of Hindutva, was also disappointing for the BJP. In Panchmahal, BJP and the Congress have won equal number of seats. The BJP was successful in grabbing Halol, Kalol, Rajgadh and Sahera seats. While in Godhra, the voters helped the Congress win the seat. Apart from Godhara, the Congress also occupied the seats of Lunavada and Santrampur from Panchamahal district. The ex-Congress leader of Padra Dinesh Patel (Dinumama) won Padra seat as an independent candidate. He said "I am ready to support the BJP whenever demanded".Out of the 10 constituencies of Vadodara districts, the Congress has been successful in gaining five seats, while four seats have gone to BJP. Naswadi, Savli, Pavi -Jetpur, Karjan, and Dabhoi constituency have been snatched by the Congress. While the BJP has been successful in maintaining the Vadodara rural, Sankheda, Waghodia, and Chotta Udaipur seats. But three seats of Vadodara city went in favor of the BJP. The voters of Vadodara have once again supported BJP by gifting it Raopura, Sayajigunj, and Saherwadi seats.
