A BPO employee, Nimish Bhatt, was going home one day at around 2:30 am when a number of cars overtook his motorcycle near the Shivranjni crossroads at speeds close to 100 km. The cars, which had loud music and screams coming out of them, were driven by youngsters racing to have fun. Bhatt's experience is not isolated. A craze for driving fast seems to have infected Ahmedabad youth, particularly those living in the western parts of the city. Most people who return home from work late at night have come across youngsters driving around dangerously. Such reckless drivers can be found on roads such as Polytechnic crossroads, Ashram road, Shivranjni crossroads, SG road and the ring roads of Ahmedabad. Rutvij Desai, an MBA student, said, "I escaped death by a whisker once while returning from Gandhinagar. Three cars overtook me one after another near Jodhpur crossroads as I drove home on my motorcycle. The cars were travelling at around 90 km an hour.” Vinod Patel, too, said he had come across youth driving recklessly at night. “I earn my living filming marriages and other functions on video. I usually reach home in the night. I have often come across youngsters driving around recklessly between Shivranjani crossroads and the SG road,” said Patel. Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic), S J Bhatti, said, “We have received reports of youth driving rashly merely to have fun. I have ordered officers to keep an eye on them. We are planning an intensive drive against dangerous driving in western Ahmedabad.”
