Cops seize meat worth Rs1.14 cr
Gau Raksha Samiti member among four arrested

Acting on a tip-off, the police on Thursday seized 135 tones of meat, including beef, in seven AC containers worth Rs1.14 crore from near Mujpur in Padra. The police also arrested four persons and an FIR was lodged in this connection. In a joint operation, the Padra police, Vadodara People for Animals, Animal Welfare Board of India and Animal Rights Organisation laida trap and made the breakthrough when the consignment was being transported from Uttar Pradesh toMumbai. Police sources said that when a car was spotted coming towards Mujpur, Viha Bharvad, an active member of Gau Raksha Samiti, and cops jumped out of nearby bushes where they were hiding and intercepted the vehicle. On seeing them, the drivers and cleaners of the vehicle fled away on foot. However, four of their associates were arrested. During investigation, the police found 'buffalo meat' written on some containers but cops suspected it to be that of cow. An FSL team is expected to arrive here to take samples of the meat. PSI AJ Baloch said, "Those arrested include Mehji Bharvad, member of Gau Raksha Samiti, Vadodara, Shailesh Parmar, Jitendra Bhraman (Rajasthan) and Subesingh Jat (Haryana). Animal activist Viha Bharvad told DNA, "Beef is being smuggled here on a large scale as the main transmit route from UP to Mumbai passes through Gujarat." Raids were being carried out to nab the absconders.
