A mood of despair prevailed among the crime branch officials as 10 prisoners including master mind of the gang Mukesh Damor escaped when they were being escorted to Sabarmati jail on Wednesday. The gang members were arrested by the Ahmedabad crime branch in January and February 2008. "The arrest of the members of Sobhan Gang was result of an intense patrolling and exercise carried out over three months," said police inspector of Ahmedabad crime branch, Ajay Gakkhar."It will be difficult to arrest them again, as they will hide now in interior parts of the border area," Joint commissioner of police, Ashish Bhatia told DNA. A team headed by Gakkhar has been sent to search the whereabouts of the absconding criminals. They are also hunting for them at the places from where they were arrested earlier."A red alert is declared in Dahod, Godhra and some villages of Madhya Pradesh," Gakkhar told DNA. Though most of the members belong to these areas, possibility they may not park themselves there this time and may look for some other safe spots, he said. However, an IPS officer blamed the police officials escorting the prisoners for the gaffe. He said the stop was intentional to give an opportunity to the criminals to flee. The 14-member gang operates very silently. They visit the city as daily wagers and loot the jewellery shops in the area. Later, they spread panic in the area by shouting and pelting stones. After carrying out the loot, the gang members disperse in different areas, while one of them carries the loot bounty. They often leave the place by walking away on the railway tracks.
