Summer has just set in but most Barodians may have to miss the 'ideal shield' against heat: lemon juice. As the price of lemon has risen phenomenally, many shops have stopped serving its juice. While some are serving it at an exorbitant price. So, you will have to pay 50% more to quench your thirst with lemon juice. Shortage of lemons and its increasing demand is to blame for the fruit's raised price. Lemon price has shot up to Rs80 per kg from Rs40 in the last few days in Vadodara. Many of the juice parlours serving cool lemon juice have doubled its price. Vijay Patel, a juice parlour owner told DNA, "We had to increase the price as we pay very high for lemons. The supply of lemons from the wholesale market is inadequate due to which we have to pay more." Suresh Kachiya, a wholesale vegetable supplier, said, "The stock of lemons coming to the market has surprisingly gone down. This has created shortage in the market. On the other hand, with the onset of summer, the demand for lemons has increased to a great extent." A food court owner said, "We have stopped serving lemon pieces with food items." Some of the food joints have started charging extra for lemon, if the customer demands it. A few of them are serving citric acid mixed with water as a substitute. Harish Vanjani, a local vendor of wholesale market, said, "We expect a rise in the prices of lemon in the coming days." He added, "The vegetable stores are directly dealing with farmers so a crunch in the market has been created." The vegetable super markets are selling lemons at a price ranging between Rs 52 and Rs 55 per kg. When asked about the cause behind the increase in lemon price, the staff members of a vegetable store said, "It's because of the shortage of lemons in the market." The retail vegetable vendors are selling lemons at a price of Rs90 per kg, which is a record of sorts
