12 die as truck turns turtle in Anand dist
Victims were from Nandurbar in Maharashtra; villagers claimed that despite complaints, the R&B department had not repaired the road

At least 12 labourers from the Nandurabr district of Maharashtra were killed when the truck they were travelling in turned turtle near Devpura village under Borsad taluka of Anand district early on Saturday. The truck driver who fled the spot soon after the mishap surrendered himself to the police in the evening.According to eyewitnesses as well as police, the mishap took place when the iron rod-laden truck was going from Ankleshwar in Bharuch district to Vallabhipur in Bhavnagar district. The labourers were sitting on the iron rods.Around 4 am, as the truck was passing near Devpura, its front wheels got into a ditch, resulting in the mishap. The truck driver perhaps could not see the ditch as it was dark. Once the truck over turned, the labourers were buried under the iron bars.While ten of them died on the spot, four injured were taken to a nearby primary health centre (PHC). Two of the injured died during treatment. The police were trying to identify the victims.Villagers rushed to the spot hearing the screams of the labourers and started rescuing the injured before the police reached the spot. The villagers took the injured in tractors to the PHC at Bamangam. Some villagers complained that despite repeated complaints the roads and buildings (R&B) department had not repaired the road, which caused the mishap. They also told DNA that about six months back another mishap had taken place at the same spot.The Ankalav police have filed a case of accidental death and were investigating the matter. The truck driver, Satish Kotla, surrendered to the police on Saturday evening.
