Will MSU V-C Manoj Soni get an extension?
The V-Cs term ends on April 16

The three-year term of MSU vice chancellor Manoj Soni ends on April 16. Even as the search is on for a new candidate, speculation is rife on campus that Soni may be given an extension, given his proximity to the BJP and RSS.Soni had grabbed headlines last year after the controversy over exhibition by a fine arts faculty student Chandramohan that allegedly hurt sentiments of Hindus. The BJP and VHP activists had roughed up Chandramohan, who was later arrested by police. In the wake of the objections by the Hindu activist, Soni had ordered that the fine arts department at MSU be sealed. A three- member committee headed by former IIM-A director Dr Bakul Dholakia is busy scrutinising bio-data received from applicants for the post of V-C. According to university officials, the committee has received a total of 60 applications for the post. The panel is now going through the resumes to shortlist 20 names for the post. However, a majority of university staff members believe that Soni's term will be extended for another three years. President of the Baroda university teachers association Dr II Pandya said, "The current state government has always promoted 'Yes men' for the post of the V-C in different universities. So, I expect another 'Yes man' to become the new V-C at MSU."He said, "The current V-C has performed his duty as per the standards set by the state government. But some issues like the exhibition of indecent paintings at the fine arts faculty have created a major row. So, nothing can be said for certain about Soni's extension."
