Spencer unveils expansion plans
Opens first hypermarket at Vadodara; plans 36 stores in Guj

RPG group's Spencer Retail on Thursday said it will open 2,000 stores across India by 2009. The company also revealed plans to open 36 stores in Gujarat. The stores in Gujarat would come up at Surat, Rajkot, Anand, Nadiad, Mehsana, Vapi Ahmedabad and Bulsar, its group president and CEO (retail), Spencer Retail, Sumanta Banerjee said on Thursday.India's largest chain of supermarkets Spencer Retail Ltd inaugurated its first hypermarket on Thursday at Vadodara, the cultural capital of Gujarat. Banerjee said, “The hypermarket offers exclusive shopping experience at no extra cost. In addition, we have designed it to make the browsing through the store easy for the customers."The CEO added that they have been planning to invest heavily in the hypermart format. Spencer has 400 outlets with 15 hyper markets, 11 super markets and 374 daily and express stores across 55 cities in the country. Talking about Gujarat scenerio, he said, “We have 14 stores in Ahmedabad and are planning total four stores in Vadodara. By the end of 2008 we will have 36 stores in the state."
