Hotel industry cannot flourish until prohibition is relaxed
Director of Canada-India Foundation feels Gujarat can benefit from liquor tax as a major source of revenue
Maulik Buch. Vadodara
"The hotel industry will not flourish in Gujarat till prohibition on liquor is relaxed in the state," said director of Canada-India Foundation Ajit Someshwar during his visit to Vadodara recently.Talking to DNA about development of the state, Someshwar pointed out, "Gujarat has tremendous potential as far as investment in the hotel industry is concerned, but the prohibition of liquor forces many investors to think twice before investing. The state government should relax the prohibition policy and leave the principle of morality to the public. Moreover, the state can benefit from the liquor tax which will become a major source of revenue."Canada-India Foundation works in the field of bilateral relationship between the two countries. Someshwar was in the city as part of a foundation initiative. He said, "We have full faith in Narendra Modi's leadership. The main concern for any investor from abroad is the bureaucratic approach of the state. The state government is very transparent and fast as far as its approach is concerned. Gujarat is emerging as a major industrial power in India. We see Gujarat as the gateway as it has a long coastline. We are coming up with small projects in Gujarat, but as far as hotel industry in Gujarat is concerned, we will have to give it a second thought. The state should liberalize the liquor policy in the state." He added the central government's propaganda against Gujarat was misleading the investors. The Centre should treat all the states equally. He said, "We have informed the Canadian government to view India as a nation which is consistently growing. Both nations can benefit if bilateral relations are strengthened. Canada needs Indian employees on a very large scale as the working population of Canada is dwindling. The government is on the verge of changing the immigration policies to attract more human resource. On the other hand, India can be benefited by Canada's huge fuel resource. It is also doing extensive research in conventional energy."
