A cleric (Maulvi) at Vasti Khandali village of Vagra taluka in Bharuch district, who taught scriptures to children of the village, allegedly raped a nine-year-old girl on Sunday. On learning of the incident, villagers flogged the cleric before handing him over to the police. The police have registered an FIR in this connection and sent both the accused and the victim to hospital for medical examination. The police said 40-year-old Iliyas Yakub Divan, a resident of Dabha village (near Vastikhandali village) in Bharuch district, used to work as a Maulvi and teacher of scriptures at the village. Since there was a marriage in the village on Sunday, only three children had come to his residence to study the scriptures. The police said the cleric allegedly asked the victim girl to bring a matchbox from another room of the house. He followed the girl to the other room and raped her there. After committing the crime, he threatened the victim that he would kill her if she complained about it to anyone. The girl returned to her house and went to sleep without telling anyone about what had happened. However, when she woke up at around midnight and went to the toilet, her mother saw blood in her urine. The mother was frightened and asked her daughter about the blood. At this the minor girl broke down and told her mother about the rape.
