If the ill-maintained GSRTC bus that plunged into the Narmada canal killing 44 passengers was a coffin on wheels, the driver seemed to have had a death wish if his track record is anything to go by.For, Madhusudan Baria, the driver of the GSRTC bus that plied on the Waghbod-Bodeli route had a career marred by accidents. This is contrary to the clean image of Baria proclaimed by GSRTC MD GR Aloria immediately after the mishap. In 1997, a GSRTC bus driven by Baria had collided with a two-wheeler killing the rider on the spot. Following the incident, an inquiry was initiated and RTO had suspended his licence for a few days. Even the GSRTC had stopped his increment for the last 5 years. The details were found from the history sheet of Baria maintained at the Bodeli depot. “Baria was assigned to bus no GJ-18 4490 some 10 years ago. On January, 19, 1997 the bus knocked down a motorist, who died on the spot," said an official from the Bodeli Bus Depot. Baria was a resident of Ratanpur and had been designated for the Waghbod-Bodeli route for around two years. Baria again found himself in controversy around 2006 when he improperly parked his bus near Surya Ghoda village. A truck collided with the parked bus which also ended up damaging the bus stand. Baria was also injured in the incident. However, his colleagues knew him as a self motivated person. "Madhusudan had no vices. He did not even chew tobacco which is a common form of addiction among the drivers," said a GSRTC driver who worked with him. According to the driver, Mad husudhan was helpful and motivated.
