57-year-old wins Malaysia marathon, cries for help
Shana Padhiyar says govt should encourage athletics, provide support to those who are keen on it

A Vadodara-based athlete has won the first prize in the 5,000 metre international marathon held in Malaysia recently. The 57-year-old, Shana Padhiyar, represented India with financial support provided by friends and well-wishers.Padhiyar has won many national-level marathon races. Talking to DNA, he says: "Since 1993, I have been participating in various competitions. I have secured first prize in 14 competitions and had also participated in Western Athletics Federation of India two months ago, where I secured second position in a 10-km marathon race." Padhiyar's outstanding performance at national-level marathon races showed him the way to the international marathon race held in Malaysia. It was organised by Malaysia Masters Athletic Association and ministry of youth and sports, Malaysia."Due to my economic condition, I was always in a dilemma if could participate in the marathon. But local councillors and athlete associations supported me with financial aid, which made it possible for me to win the marathon," he added. However, he regrets the kind of treatment given to athletes in India. "The government should encourage athletics in the country. No-one from the state or the central government has even turned up to wish me on my achievement," he added.
