3 killed in Wockhardt plant blast
Explosion occurred while workers were welding a chemical tank pipeline

Three workers died in a sudden explosion at the Wockhardt Pharma Limited near Ankleshwar on Monday. The blast took place when the workers were busy welding one of the pipelines of a chemical tank at the MPP plant in the afternoon. According to the police, the workers on contract labour were welding the pipeline of a tank. When the spark from the welding machine came into contact with the residue of the chemical in the tank, there was an explosion and the lid of the tank blew off.The workers, who were working sitting on the 2.5-meter-high tank, were thrown off and critically injured. Out of the three workers, Dinesh Kumar Ray (25) died on the spot while Pavan Shah (25) and Nuram Rasul Ansari (40) were severely injured. They were shifted to a nearby hospital. However, both the injured died during treatment at the hospital. The Wockhardt explosion comes around a month after the BIEL fire at Ankleshwar. Wockhardt's associate vice president S Suresh said, "We have started procedures for the shut down of the MPP plant. The workers who died in the accident were labourers on contract. But the company has announced a compensation of Rs 1 lakh each for the family members of all the three victims. The storage tank which exploded was shut off since five months, while the workto disconnect the pipeline was going on when the accident took place."Deputy director of industrial safety and health department TJ Gamit said, "Residues of ammonia, water and IPA were present in the tank. There was a reaction as soon as spark came in contact with the chemicals. The tank should have been completely cleaned before the disconnection. We have set up a technical committee to investigate into the matter. On the basis of the report by the committee, necessary action will be taken in this regard."
