Students threaten stir if recommendations of the panel not implemented

Whether the recommendation of fact-finding team, suggesting that the suspensions of MS University (MSU) former acting dean and professor Shivji Panikkar and Chandra Mohan be revoked, will be implemented or not has become a debatable issue nowadays on the varsity campus. Prior to this committee, the M S University authorities had also set up a three-member committee, which had submitted its report on August 23, 2007.The report submitted by the university committee was exactly opposite to the one submitted by the fact-finding panel set up by the governor. According to the university committee's recommendations, a notice was issued to Professor Iftikhar Ahmed of history department on December 29, 2007. He was charged with indiscipline, instigating students and forming an illegal organisation. With reference to this notice the students of fine arts burnt the university's report to oppose the move. On reacting to the fact-finding report, pro-VC of M S University Professor S M Joshi said, "We have not yet received the report of the committee set up by the governor, so we can not comment on revoking the suspensions." Reacting to the committee's report, Panikkar said, "The report has done justice to the faculty. But so far as the implementation of the reports findings by the university is concerned, I think, it will implement the findings. If the university doesn't abide by the committee's recommendations, probably I will contact higher authorities." While the complainant regarding the alleged painting at fine arts, advocate Niraj Jain said, "The committee has not taken my statement and submitted the report. It proves that the report is prepared to save the culprits. There is no law which gives anyone a right to indecently portray any religion. If the university authorities implement the recommendations and revoke the suspensions, I will concentrate on the legal case filed against them."Reacting to Jain's allegation that committee members did not take his statement, Y K Alagh, a member of the committee, said, "We had announced a particular date and timings for the people to approach us on the issue. Niraj Jain had come to meet us but he went back without meeting the committee members." Professor Iftikhar Ahmed of history department, who was recently issued a show-cause notice by the university authorities, however, declined to comment on the report.
