Vadodara mishap sets off communal clashes
Trouble started in Madanzhapa locality, but by late evening some other areas had also witnessed violence

Tension gripped parts of the city on Monday after sporadic clashes between two communities. The trouble started in Madanzhapa area in Monday afternoon, when two groups clashed over a road accident involving two youths of different communities. The clash soon snowballed into a major issue and warring groups started pelting stones at each other.Police had to fire four tear gas cells to control the angry mob. However, at least eight police officials, including an ACP and two inspectors, and four others sustained injuries in the stone pelting. The situation appeared to have improved by the evening, but took a turn for worse in the late evening when people from Tadphalia and Dudhwala localities came out of their houses and pelted stones on each other.These two localities are close to Madanzhapa where the trouble had first started. There was, however, no report of any major damage in the clash.Earlier, police officials faced major resistance from women of Madanzhapa who were angry at arrest of 'innocent' people of their locality. The women came out and squatted on road, protesting the arrest of a former councillor and police had a tough time pushing them back. Police also had to release the councillor to pacify the crowd.The Navapura police have lodged a formal complaint against the 14 persons and started investigations in the matter.Police rushed to Madanzhapa as the news of tension spread. Personnel from three police stations - Wadi, Navapura and the DCB police station - rushed to the troubled spot. Soon senior police officials, led by commissioner of police Rajan Priyadarshi, reached there. The angry mob in the meantime had set afire many vehicles parked on the road. Police had to fire four tear gas cells to control the mob. Later, police also lathicharged to disperse the angry protestors.
