Rly to lay water pipeline alongside tracks:Lalu
The project will help overcome drinking water crisis; madrasa degrees will be considered for rly jobs

Indian Railways will lay a water pipeline parallel to the railway tracks to eradicate the water crisis across the country. This was announced by Union railway minister Lalu Prasad Yadav at the foundation stone-laying ceremony for broad gauge conversion of two narrow gauge lines at Samni station near Bharuch on Sunday.The 62.38-km narrow gauge line of Bharuch-Samni-Dahej will be converted to broad gauge at a cost of Rs230 crore, while the 62.89-km narrow gauge line between Ankleshwar and Rajpipla will be converted to broad gauge at a cost of Rs196.97 crore. "All the railway tracks across the country will be converted to broad gauge lines. The work will be completed within 18 months. I promise a garib rath on this track. This train will connect Ahmedabad via Vadodara,'' he told a huge gathering.He said: "While some areas are flooded with water, there is water crisis in other parts. The water pipeline will be connected to rivers. And when the project is completed, the railways will be the top supplier of potable water.''The minister continued: "When I took over as railway minister, the fund balance of the railways was Rs350 crore which has now increased to Rs69,000 crore. I promise to take it to Rs1,00,000 crore by March 2009." He said he was aiming to generate more jobs in the railways and the degree of madrasas would be regarded as "recognised degree" for the recruitment in the railways. "All the seats on trains will be furnished by cushions in two years,'' He said workshops would be developed at Dabhoi and Hapa at Rs270 crore and Rs100 crore respectively.
