Now, earthen fridge to preserve food
The 'scientist' from Wankaner draws praise from former president Kalam

It is said that necessity is the mother of invention. It may be a cliché for many but not for Mansukhbhai Prajapati, who, after drawing inspiration from a statement published in a newspaper, take it as a necessity to develop a 'refrigerator' for poor people. The statement, which inspired him, was "Garibo na fridge (matka) tutya".Mansukhbhai, who hails from Wankaner near Rajkot, has received praise for his work from none other than the former president A P J Abdul Kalam. After giving Mansukhbhai an award, Kalam, himself a scientist, had said, "You are a real scientist."Mansukhbhai, while talking to DNA, said, "I always had a special feeling for poor people and it was further increased by the statement published in the newspaper. One day I decided to make a refrigerator for them which they can easily afford without paying any electricity bill.""I started working on my concept and after three years of hard work, I finally succeeded in converting my dream into a reality when I made my first earthen refrigerator," he said. But, how does the earthen fridge function? He said the 'refrigerator' was made of terracotta and normal clay. "The refrigerator has two parts. The upper part, which is like a small tank, is for storing drinking water. It can store about 20 liter water. This tank has two qualities, you can store water for drinking and the stored water keeps other materials, kept in the lower part, afresh. You can keep milk and vegetables at least for two to five days. You have to ensure enough water in the tank if you want to keep things afresh. It takes three months to make one such refrigerator."Mansukhbhai is now busy improving the fridge's design and making it more useful. The Wankaner man has also developed an earthen pressure cooker and non-stick pan. "My pressure cooker works on the same principal as any metal cooker. But, you can make tastier food in my cooker because it is made of clay.""In non-stick pan, I have put a non-stick coat on. It is now in the market and available at affordable prices," he said.
