I could help save 4, saw others drown
Harish Kamaiya was walking near the canal when the bus plunged
Maulik Buch. Bodeli
"The screams of dying children were deafening, they are still ringing in my ears. Dozens of children were throwing up their hands, gasping, crying. My heart was pounding, but I ran for help. I got hold of some rope and threw it in the water. With a little luck, I managed to pull out four children from the water. But many more drowned in front of my eyes," said Harish Kamaiya, an eyewitness of the bus accident near Bodeli. Kamaiya was the only person walking near the Narmada canal when the GSRTC bus fell into it from a bridge on Wednesday morning. Narrating the incident, Kamaiya, a resident of Bodeli and a stamp vendor by vocation, said, "I was on a morning walk along the canal and was heading towards the bridge. All of a sudden, I heard a crashing sound. When I look up to see, the bus had broken the railing along the bridge and was tumbling down. I heard cries of help of children, and saw them struggle to escape death. I hurriedly went to the other side of the road where a vehicle was passing by. I managed to stop the vehicle and told the driver of the mishap.""The vehicle driver immediately brought out ropes to save the kids. We could save four children. As soon as four children were brought out, I rushed to my house and came back with some more ropes. But no, I could not save any more kids. I then informed local officials of the mishap."
