Development means proper civic amenities'
The Vadodara-born mayor of Brent says VMC should get more money for infrastructural development
Maulik Buch. Vadodara
He was born in Umreth village, studied in Vallabh Vidyanagar at Anand and now is the mayor of Brent in London. He was even recently awarded the "busiest mayor" in London. Meet Harshad Patel, the mayor of the borough of 2.75 lakh people. According to him, Gujarat has got economic growth but having few luxurious malls, a state or a city cannot be termed as developed one. "Development means proper civic amenities like drainage system, adequate drinking water and other such facilities," he said. Patel, while talking to DNA, said, "Vadodara is still a developing city in terms of the civic amenities. I heard people here were opposing the increase in water tax. If the corporation provides services and the facilities worth the tax, every individual should pay for it." "The city is really progressing but it lacks in discipline like unruly traffic. I am really upset to see layers of mud on the road and auto-rickshaw fueling with kerosene and no actions taken by officials concerned."He expressed his unhappiness over the amount released by the VMCin its annual budget. "Brent has a population of just 2.75 lakh with a budget of Rs1000 crores while Vadodara, which has the population of 17lakh, gets only Rs650 crore.”
