Jhagadiya observed total bandh on Thursday in protest at the gangrape of an adivasi girl on the outskirts of the village. In the meantime, five more persons were arrested by the police on Thursday in connection with the incident. With this, the total number of persons arrested in this connection now stands at nine. The five accused arrested on Thursday are Prakash alias Pako Suresh Vasava, Gangaram Narsingh Vasava, Jayanti Bhikha Vasava, Sanjay alias Kolo Vasava and Jitu manga Vasava. The police also produced in court on Thursday the four accused who were arrested the previous day, and took them on remand till February 22. Meanwhile, people's response to the bandh call was total. From early in the morning, there was no public activity in the village and even milk and vegetable vendors refused to venture out for work. All shops in the town remained closed. Residents said they had joined the bandh voluntarily and there was no political agenda behind their protest. Villagers later gathered spontaneously at a place and took out a silent rally. The huge rally culminated into a public meeting in front of the mamlatdar office where the protestors shouted slogans to express their anger and pain at the incident. At the mamlatdar office, the deputy sarpanch of Jhagadiya presented a memorandum to the mamlatdar, urging him on behalf of the residents to ensure that the culprits were punished. The authorities of Divan Dhanjisha High School also joined in the bandh and kept the school closed on Thursday. The trustees and staff of the school, too, joined in the rally taken out by Jhagadiya villagers. Later, deputy sarpanch of Jhagadiya, Vijay Singh Parmar, said, "We are worried about the security of every individual in the village. We have met police officials and apprised them about the threat of sexual harassment that always hangs over women in the area. Unfortunately, we received no satisfactory assurance from any quarter. The gang rape was the result of the indifference of the police to our past complaints." The tribal girl was raped for two hours by 12 criminals in the bushes near the mission ground on February 2 but no FIR was lodged. It was only when the victim's mother gathered the courage to speak out about the gang rape, that the police registered an FIR about the incident. Meanwhile, the Jhagadiya police are intensively searching for the prime accused, Bobby and Kishan, who are alleged to have led the other rapists.
