Massage parlours or brothels?
Nikunj Soni & Maulik Buch
Slow music, tinted windows and garishly dressed women confront you as you enter any of the seven to eight massage parlours operating in a busy shopping complex near Vijay crossroads. Once you make yourself comfortable, women at these parlours will offer you all kinds of 'services'. Ahmedabad may not have a designated red light area, but there are some 300-odd such parlours in the city which run prostitution rackets right under the noses of cops. One of the staffers of such a parlour, Krish Hair & Care, in fact, revealed how the owner tried to push her into the flesh trade and when she refused, he poured acid on her face.Parlour owners said they ran the racket in connivance with the police department who they regularly send their 'cuts'. But these parlours which are located around residential areas have become a menace and probably are trapping many unsuspecting women into the flesh trade. These parlours, which appear to be beauty saloons from outside, are found mostly in shopping complexes in the western parts of the city. The parlours have shoddy interiors and the only enchanting elements are the chairs and curtains. The parlours have several curtained booths where women cosy up with their 'customers'.These parlours are frequented mostly by college students and young professionals. "I have never slept with a prostitute, but I used to visit these parlours to get sexual pleasure," said Rajesh, who works in a mobile phone company as a sales executive."Women at these parlours charge much less than what call girl do. The parlours are quite safe and nobody interrupts you."The cops, meanwhile, said they can crackdown on these parlours provided someone files a complaint. "We can only act if a victim or any other person files a complaint," AK Jadeja, DCP zone 1, said. A person familiar with functioning of sleazy parlours said, "The girls working at these parlours come from poor families. Even married women take up such jobs. They change parlours frequently to hide identity."
