Even as he faces a strong student backlash following the suspension of Fine Arts faculty's acting dean Shivaji Pannikar, there is a likelihood of M S University (MSU) VC Manoj Soni getting a second term. Soni's tenure will come to an end in April. The three-member committee, headed by chairman and the ex-director of IIM Ahmedabad, Bakul Dholakia, is currently on the job to find a replacement for Soni. But the VC, who is considered to be a Modi loyalist, may get another term. The tenure of MSU's VC has been full of controversies. It was during his tenure that seven students of Faculty of Technology, including a student leader, were declared passed and a Sahitya Academy Award winner was not promoted to professor in the Gujarati department. The latest one is the Fine Arts row which has still been persisting even after months. The university at present is facing crisis of faith in the system and there is a great amount of dissatisfaction among the varsity employees over the performance of the VC.President of Baroda University Teachers' Association (BUTA) I I Pandya said, "The vice-chancellor's controversial decisions were critisised and condemned by the society at large. The committee members have to keep all these things in mind. A larger section of the university employees is not happy with the VC's style of functioning.""By and large, majority of the decisions were taken under haste and political pressure. The legitimate right of any segment of the university should not be hampered in any case," he said.Former UGS Jha Desai said, "The academic standards of the university have seen many ups and downs in the last three years. If the higher authorities are interested in improving the condition of the university, the VC should not be given a second term."A senate member, Narendra Ravat, said, "Soni is not qualified enough to be a vice chancellor of the esteemed university. If he gets any extension, it would be a political move and disastrous for the university."Dr Dholakia, however, refused to comment on the probability of Soni getting another term or any new names under consideration for the post.
