MSU sans cell to check abuse
A Supreme Court order requires the varsity to set up a cell to check abuse of women on the campus
Maulik Buch. Vadodara
Though the MS University (MSU) vice-chancellor says the varsity has constituted a committee to set up a cell that would look into allegations of sexual harassment of women on the campus, teachers of the university insist there is no such cell and, if one existed, it was there only on paper. In the light of a Supreme Court order, the MSU, like all other universities of the country, is required to set up a women's cell to look specifically into allegations of sexual harassment of women on the campus. Vice-chancellor Manoj Soni said the university had formed a 'constitutional body' as required under the apex court order. "A committee has also been constituted and is performing its duty well," he added. However, Dean of the Faculty of Family and Community Science, Dr Prerna Mohite, said there was no women's cell in the university. "There is no arrangement in the university to ensure that women are not subjected to sexual harassment on the campus. After what happened at Patan, the university should set up a women's cell as early as possible," she said. BUTA president Dr II Pandya accused the vice-chancellor of having no interest in getting even a committee constituted. "The VC was absent from the two meetings which were held specifically for the formation of the committee. It was the university registrar who took the decision to constitute the committee. As for a full-fledgedcell, all plans for it exist only on paper," said Pandya.
