Too many university graduates, but talent for industry scarce

Meet in Vadodara focuses on why grads don't match up to industry needs

Despite the number of universities and institutes handing out degrees and diplomas in various fields, there is a crunch of good talent in the industry. This issue was raised by ONGC director in-charge AK Balyan at a met in the city on Sunday. Industry players too agreed that the talent situation in the state needed to improve. There are many recognised universities in the country, but when their graduates don't match up to the industry requirement. Balyan said, "The industry has a high demand of human resource in all fields. Universities and institutes that put out freshers lack the attitude that the industry demands. The curricula and course are probably not suitably updated to match the requirements."In alighter vein, he said, "We are habituated to live in a five-year programme. While the industry wants human resource, few have the attitude to meet the requirement."Director of DPS Ltd, Feroz Holia, said, "We have 245 recognised universities in India, while China has 900 and US 4,000 universities. Universities abroad concentrate on the practical training, while we are still too concerned with academics."There is an imbalance between the demand of industry and supply from academics (universities), which is a matter of concern for both the groups.
